Natasha Vlassenko OAM
Chair of Jury
Well-known Russian-Australian pianist Natasha Vlassenko was a major prize winner at the Beethoven International Piano Competition in Vienna, Austria, and the Busoni International Piano Competition in Bolzano, Italy. Following these achievements, she was invited to become a soloist with the Moscow Philharmonic—one of the most prestigious concert organizations in the Soviet Union. Since then, she has given numerous recitals and performed with major symphony orchestras under the batons of conductors such as Rozhdestvensky, Pletnev, Osterriher, Martin, Chivjel, Hickok, Verbitsky, and many others.
Natasha has recorded for Moscow Radio and Television, as well as for ABC and 4MBS Classic FM in Australia. She has also released several CDs in Russia, Germany, and Australia. Her concert engagements have taken her to Germany, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Estonia, Belarus, Ukraine, Latvia, Georgia, Greece, China, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Japan, New Zealand, and Australia.
In addition to her solo career, Natasha Vlassenko frequently collaborates with Oleg Stepanov. For many years, their piano duo has delighted audiences both in Australia and internationally.
Her teaching career began when she was invited to join the faculty of the Central Music School of the Moscow Conservatory. She has since given masterclasses in numerous countries, including Germany, Austria, Russia, Latvia, Estonia, Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Australia, Singapore, and New Zealand. She has also been invited to perform and teach at the Hamamatsu International Piano Academy in Japan. In recent years, she has served as a jury member for several prestigious international piano competitions, including the International Piano Competition in Vienna, the Dublin International Piano Competition in Ireland, the Chopin International Piano Competition in Canberra, Australia, and the Kerikeri International Piano Competition in New Zealand.
Born and educated in Moscow, Natasha Vlassenko graduated from the Central Music School and the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. She began her piano studies with Eleonora Musaelian before being accepted into the class of the legendary professor Jacob Flier. After his passing, she completed her postgraduate studies under the guidance of her father, Professor Lev Vlassenko.
Since 1992, Natasha Vlassenko has resided in Australia, where she served as Head of Piano at the Queensland Conservatorium for almost 20 years. Many of her students have gone on to win major national and international piano competitions and scholarships.
In 1999, Natasha Vlassenko and Oleg Stepanov founded the Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition, which has become Australia’s largest national piano event. Over the years, the competition has expanded to include the Young Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition and, more recently, the Australian National Piano Competition for Children, also known as “Little Lev.” These competitions, along with substantial educational programs, have formed the Lev Vlassenko Piano Academy and Festival. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition attracts the finest young pianists from Australia and New Zealand, ranging in age from 6 to 30, and has played a vital role in raising the standard of piano playing in the region. Many past prize winners and participants have gone on to achieve remarkable success, including winning major prizes at international piano competitions and festivals.
In 2022, Natasha Vlassenko and Oleg Stepanov were recognized in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List and awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for their service to the performing arts, particularly piano.

Justas Dvarionas
Justas Dvarionas is an Associate Professor at the Vytautas Magnus University Music Academy in Lithuania. He has conducted masterclasses across five continents, mentoring many students who have won top honours at prestigious piano competitions. Since 2008, Justas has served as Vice-President of the EMCY, (European Union of Music Competitions for Youth) and in 2024, he was appointed President of EMCY. Justas also serves as artistic director for several competitions and frequently chairs the jury.
Justas’ musical journey began in Lithuania and led him to the Moscow P. Tchaikovsky Conservatoire, where he completed his graduate and post-graduate studies with the highest honours (Cum Laude) under the guidance of Prof. Lev Vlassenko and Mikhail Pletnev. His pianistic and musical skills were further enriched through interactions with renowned pianists Sviatoslav Richter and Elisso Virsaladze.
In 1992, during his final years of study, Justas won the Italian ‘Viotti Valsesia’ International Piano Competition and received special awards from the Portuguese ‘Porto’ International Piano Competition. He also earned high praise from Daniel Pollack at the International M.K. Curlionas Piano Competition who remarked,’Justas Dvarionas from Lithuania left me with one of the biggest impressions….he has a unique interpretation.’
With his wealth of experience, Justas has served as jury member at various international competitions including the Aarthus International Piano Competition in Denmark; the Liszt Junior Piano Competition in Germany; the International Radio Competition for Young Musicians ‘Concertino Praga’ in the Czech Republic; the Volodymyr Krainev Competition in Ukraine; the Santa Cecilia International Competition in Porto, Portugal; the Gina Bachauer Piano Competition in the USA; the Competition for Young Pianists in Memory of Vladimir Horowitz in Ukraine; the PIANALE Competition in Germany; and the R. Schumann Junior Competition in Germany.
Justas is actively engaged in concerts, teaching and jury activities across Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas.

Oleg Stepanov OAM
Well-known Latvian-Australian pianist Oleg Stepanov was the Grand Prix winner and First Prize recipient at the prestigious Vittorio Gui International Chamber Music Competition in Florence, Italy. Following this achievement, he was invited to become a soloist with Mosconcert—one of the most prestigious concert organizations in the Soviet Union. Since then, he has performed extensively across the Soviet Union and internationally, with concert engagements taking him to Germany, Sweden, Italy, China, Taiwan, Cuba, Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary, Georgia, Estonia, Hong Kong, Japan, Vietnam, New Zealand, and Australia.
For many years, Oleg Stepanov collaborated with world-renowned cellist Daniil Shafran, performing in prestigious venues worldwide, including the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory and the Saint Petersburg Philharmonia. Together, they made numerous radio and television appearances and recordings.
Later, Oleg was invited to join the faculty of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory as an Assistant Professor, marking the beginning of his teaching career.
Since 1992, Oleg Stepanov has resided in Australia, where he taught at the Queensland Conservatorium and Young Conservatorium for more than 30 years. Many of his students have won major national and international piano competitions and scholarships.
One of his most outstanding students, Ayesha Goff, the First Prize winner of the 2015 Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition, was invited to perform with the Russian National Orchestra under the baton of Mikhail Pletnev at the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. Her performance was highly acclaimed by critics in Musical Life magazine:
‘Her performance on December 24 of Liszt’s First Concerto left a delightful impression of a solid pianistic school, a good balance of virtuoso brilliance and attention to cantilena, sensitivity to the conductor’s intentions, and the necessary confidence in playing with the orchestra.’
Oleg has given numerous masterclasses in Australia and internationally, in countries such as Germany, Austria, Russia, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Latvia, Georgia, Estonia, and New Zealand. He has also served as a jury member for several prestigious competitions, including the Rome International Piano Competition in Italy, the Singapore International Music Competition for Piano and Violin, and the Goma National Piano Duo Competition in Japan.
Born in Riga, Latvia, Oleg graduated from the Jāzeps Mediņš Music College, where he studied piano under Joya Lifshitz. He later completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory under the legendary Professor Lev Vlassenko.
In addition to his solo performances, Oleg frequently collaborates with Natasha Vlassenko. For many years, their piano duo has captivated audiences in Australia and internationally.

Roger Cui
Roger is an international concert pianist, artistic executive, chamber musician, and music critic.
A former laureate of the Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition (2005, 2007), Roger is also a prize winner at other piano competitions such as the Cleveland International Piano Competition (Ohio, U.S.A.), Kerikeri International Piano Competition (New Zealand), Southern Highland International Piano Competition (Sydney, Australia), and J.S. Bach International Music Competition (Berlin, Germany).
Roger holds a Master of Music from the University of Music Karlsruhe (2012, HfM Karlsruhe) in Germany, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from Griffith University Queensland Conservatorium (2022, Brisbane). He is sponsored and represented by Yamaha Music Europe, and Kayserburg International. His chamber music partners include Jeffrey Black (Tenor, Australia), Markus Stocker (Cellist, Switzerland), Zoltan Daragó (Counter-tenor, Hungary), Marco Lima (Guitarist, Brazil), and György Déri (Cellist, Hungary).
Roger is a co-founder of the Black-Note Productions Studio (Hamburg, Germany), and has been a music critic for The Australian Music Trust.
Since 2024, Roger is the Principal Pianist for Queensland Ballet.

Ayesha Gough
Australian pianist Ayesha Gough is known for her captivating performances, combining superb technique with deeply emotional interpretations. Her performance with the Russian National Orchestra, under the baton of Mikhail Pletnev, was described by Moscow’s Musical Life Magazine as virtuosic and sensitive.
First prize-winner at the 2015 Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition, Ayesha has performed with the Queensland Symphony, the Queensland Conservatorium Symphony, and the Queensland Pops Orchestra under such conductors as Edvard Tchivzhel, Nicholas Braithwaite, Daniel Carter, and Marco Bellasi. Her recital opportunities have taken her throughout Australia, as well as New Zealand, Italy, Japan, and China. She regularly works with the Northern Rivers Symphony Orchestra and the Coolamon Singers.
Ayesha has developed her own style of unique and engaging performances grounded in traditional pianism. As the recipient of the 2022 Michael Kieran Harvey Scholarship, she created the project ‘Landings’, an exploration of the Australian landscape via improvisation, videography, and poetry. Ayesha studied under Oleg Stepanov for 10 years, both at a pre-tertiary and tertiary level at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University. Throughout 2018, she continued her studies in Italy with Boris Petrushansky at the Accademia Pianistica Internazionale “Incontri col Maestro”. In 2020, she graduated from the Royal College of Music, London, with a Masters with Distinction. At RCM she studied with Andrew Zolinsky and Gordon Fergus-Thompson whilst undertaking research concerned with pushing the boundaries of the piano recital.
She has been awarded the Theme and Variations Foundation Award, the Brisbane Club Award, the QCGU Postgraduate Prize, the Ena Williams Award, the Joyce Campbell Lloyd Scholarship, the Allison/Henderson Scholarship, and in early 2017 she participated in the Hamamatsu International Piano Academy. Ayesha has been supported by Variety, the Children’s Charity, of which she is an International Ambassador.

Renat Usupov
Music and Movement
Renat Yusupov is an accomplished musician, cellist, and educator who has dedicated his life to the pursuit of musical excellence and nurturing young talents.
His musical journey began at the esteemed State Conservatory of Uzbekistan, where he studied cello under the guidance of Professor Bukin N. A.
From 1992 to 1999, he served as the assistant principal cellist of The National Symphony Orchestra of Uzbekistan and held the prestigious position of concertmaster at the State Conservatory.
Renat’s passion for music extended beyond his own performances, as he eagerly embraced the role of a cello teacher. His wealth of experience and expertise led him to instruct musicians at leading private colleges such as The Australian Institute of Music (Sydney), Ascham School for Girls (Sydney), and St. Patrick’s College Strathfield (Sydney). Through his guidance, numerous students discovered their own musical potential and developed a deep love for the cello.
Driven by his unyielding commitment to providing a comprehensive music education, Yusupov turned his attention to the Dalcroze Approach. Renat believes that it provides young musicians with a solid foundation for a lifelong musical adventure.
The Dalcroze approach places a strong emphasis on the integration of movement, rhythm, and improvisation in musical training. By engaging the whole body in the learning process, students develop a deeper understanding of musical concepts, enhanced rhythmic accuracy, and an increased sense of expressiveness. This approach resonated deeply with Yusupov, who firmly believes that a comprehensive and immersive musical education is essential for cultivating well-rounded musicians
Presently, Renat Yusupov is actively working towards obtaining his certificate in the Dalcroze Approach. Eager to expand his pedagogical toolkit he enrolled in specialized training programs and workshops, studying under renowned Dalcroze practitioners from UK, Canada and Australia.

Jennifer Newcomb has a busy studio at Oxenford, Queensland where she teaches Piano, Composition, Pedagogy, Teacher mentoring, Written music subjects and Chamber music. She is called upon for lecturing/workshops in pedagogy, theory and piano performance. Her students regularly achieve high standards of results and awards.
She has previously taught Choral ensembles and theory at Griffith University Qld Young Conservatorium (Gold Coast Campus); Has taught and conducted choral ensembles in the school environment; Adjudicated regularly in Eisteddfodau; Presented workshops and Teacher presentations and various Pedagogy information sessions.
Jennifer is currently Principal examiner for AMEB Qld, having examined for many years; She is Co-Coordinator of QMTA Gold Coast Teacher Group Composers’ Competition and has been past President/Coordinator or QMTA Gold Coast, past Secretary of ASKM Gold Coast, Gold Coast Light Opera Company and past Convenor of Choral sections at the Gold Coast Eisteddfod.
Jennifer’s students range from beginners to advanced performers exploring various styles of music. She tutors Pianists and string players in her Chamber Music Program was founder and director of “Opus Singers” vocal ensemble since 1986 and has been an accompanist to vocal and instrumentalists.
