Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition
Ethan Chen
Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition - First Round Finalist
Hailing from Canada, Ethan Chen has studied and performed internationally since the age of 13. Ethan is the winner of the 2018 Canadian Music Competition, in which he played Rachmaninoff Concerto no. 2 with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Kent Nagano in the finals – this is in addition to prizes at numerous other competitions. The year before, he became the highest national scoring candidate for the Royal Conservatory of Music Licentiate Diploma, the most rigorous exam in Canada, and was invited to record his repertoire as an example for the national curriculum.
Currently under tutelage of Oleg Stepanov (OAM) at the Queensland Conservatorium, Ethan has studied with world renowned artists such as Younggun Kim and Marietta Orlov at the University of Toronto, Zenon Fishbein at Manhattan School of Music, Ilya Poletaev at McGill University and Igor Roma at the Prins Claus Conservatoire. He has also taken masterclasses with Dang Thai Son and Marc Andre Hamelin.
Ethan is currently a final-year medical student at Griffith University. Balancing the demands of his medical studies with his passion for the piano, Ethan believes that his pursuits in medicine and music are complementary, enriching each other in a unique and fulfilling way. He often combines the two through performance in fundraising concerts for organizations such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society. He recently incepted the Gold Coast Health Orchestra, an ensemble of healthcare staff that performs for medical non-profits.
