Calvin Abdiel

Calvin is currently a year 11 student at the Sydney Conservatorium High School, which is attached to the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.  After arrival in Australia in 2011, from his country of birth, Indonesia, Calvin studied piano for some time with Lynette Morgan, a leading AMEB examiner. Over the last 5 years, Calvin has studied piano as part of his high school curriculum under the guidance of Natalia Ricci who is on the piano faculty at the Sydney University Conservatorium of Music.

Last year he also gained admission to the Sydney Conservatorium’s competitive ‘Rising Stars’ instrumental performance program for young gifted musicians. Through his participation in this program, Calvin has given many notable performances in the concert halls of the Sydney Conservatorium.

Calvin’s most recent outstanding achievement was receiving 2nd prize in the International Competition for young pianists: “Steps to Mastery”, in St Petersburg, Russia in June this year. Calvin was the youngest in his division and one of three to reach finals, playing Tchaikovsky’s first concerto with the State Capella Orchestra of St Petersburg.  Calvin has performed in masterclasses with special guest artists Orli Shaham, Ingar Rose and Ingo Dunnhorn in 2016/7 at the SCM. He was also selected by competitive audition to perform in Musica Viva’s recorded masterclass given by renowned pianist Angela Hewitt in May this year.

In 2016, Calvin gained his LMUS AMEB qualification for piano performance with Distinction Honours. In that year, he won the Instrumental Edna Wilde Scholarship Award, for the most outstanding musician in Ryde Eisteddfod and Calvin has also enjoyed numerous other successes in local music eisteddfods both in Sydney and in Indonesia.

Notable performances in 2015 include Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio at Government House to distinguished guests, including the Governor of New South Wales and a performance at the Gospel National Convention in Jakarta in front of an audience of thousands. Calvin was also one of only three Australian participants selected to participate in the E-piano Junior Competition in 2017, held in Minneapolis.

Beyond performing music, Calvin finds interest in the fields of mathematics and music composition. He has completed the highest level of mathematics in school two years ahead of his year. He has also had considerable experience as a piano accompanist, including accompanying rehearsals of the combined choirs of the University of Sydney and the Conservatorium High School.
